A neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is a hospital unit that specializes in the care of premature or sick newborn babiesNICUs are also known as intensive care nurseries (ICNs) or special care nurseries.
Babies may be admitted to the NICU if they: Were born early, Have a low birth weight, Have a medical condition, and Experienced complications during birth. 
 
NICUs are staffed by a team of experts, including neonatologists, nurses, respiratory therapists, and dietitians. The NICU has several areas, including a critical care area, an intermediate care area, and a step down unit.
Babies typically stay in the NICU for a few hours to several months, depending on their health condition. When a baby is ready to leave the NICU, they may be moved to a special care nursery where they will receive less frequent monitoring
